Terms of Service

gleantree is operated by Bokinion Holdings LLC, an Alabama limited liability company. By subscribing to the digest or using the research workbench, you agree to these terms. They are short because the product is simple: we surface findings from public records, for information — not advice — and we ask you to use the service honestly.

What the service is

gleantree currently offers two things, both free:

  • The weekly nonprofit digest — an email built from public IRS Form 990 data. You pick up to three editions (states or sectors), confirm your address via the double opt-in email, and can unsubscribe with one click at any time.
  • The research workbench — the app at app.gleantree.com, an interactive search and dashboard tool over the same public data. The workbench is in an invite-only beta: access is granted individually, and beta features may change, break, or be withdrawn as we build.

There are no paid tiers today. If we introduce one, we will update these terms (and tell you) before charging anyone anything.

Where the data comes from — and its limits

Everything gleantree shows you derives from public records, primarily IRS Form 990 filings as released by the IRS and via ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer. You should understand what that means in practice:

  • It lags. Nonprofits file annually and releases trail the fiscal years they cover, often by a year or more. What you see reflects the most recent filings, not necessarily the organization’s situation today.
  • It can be incomplete or wrong at the source. Filings contain errors, amendments, and gaps. We preserve what was filed; we cannot make the underlying record better than it is.
  • Our signals are derived and heuristic. Anomaly flags, benchmarks, and trajectories are produced by rules and statistical comparisons we wrote, and narrative summaries are drafted with AI assistance. They are starting points for your own review of the primary record — a signal is not a finding of wrongdoing, misconduct, or financial distress, and it should never be treated as one.

Informational only — not advice

gleantree is an informational research tool. Nothing in the digest or the workbench is financial, legal, tax, accounting, or investment advice, and nothing here creates any professional relationship. Do not make funding, employment, donation, legal, or investment decisions based solely on gleantree — verify against the primary filings and consult a qualified professional where it matters.

Acceptable use

Use the service honestly. You agree not to:

  • scrape, crawl, or bulk-extract the workbench, or access it by any automated means;
  • share, lend, or resell your beta invite or account — access is personal to you;
  • probe, overload, or circumvent our authentication, tokens, or rate limits, or abuse the signup endpoints;
  • republish the digest or workbench content wholesale, or present gleantree’s analysis as your own or as ours where it has been altered;
  • use the service for anything unlawful.

The underlying public records are, of course, public — nothing here restricts your use of the primary sources themselves. Quoting gleanings with attribution is welcome.

Your account and the beta

Keep your sign-in credentials secure; you are responsible for activity under your account. Because the workbench is a beta, we may suspend or revoke access, change features, or discontinue the beta at any time. The beta may also transition to a paid product: beta access is not a promise of continued free access, and if that happens we will update these terms and tell you before charging anyone anything. We may terminate accounts that violate these terms. You can stop using the service, or unsubscribe from the digest, whenever you like.

Intellectual property

The gleantree name, site, digest design, and our original text, analysis, and software belong to Bokinion Holdings LLC. The facts in public records belong to no one. You get a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the service under these terms — nothing more is transferred.

No warranty

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, TIMELINESS, MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT ANY SIGNAL, FLAG, OR NARRATIVE IS CORRECT.

Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BOKINION HOLDINGS LLC AND ITS OPERATOR WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, REVENUES, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE SERVICE — INCLUDING DECISIONS MADE IN RELIANCE ON IT. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS (US $100) OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM (WHICH, TODAY, IS ZERO — THE SERVICE IS FREE).

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Alabama, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that ends up in court belongs in the state or federal courts located in Jefferson County, Alabama, and both sides consent to that venue.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product evolves. When we do, we will update the date at the top of this page, and for material changes we will notify digest subscribers by email before the change takes effect. Continuing to use the service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
